Priyanka Jain's Phospholipid Bilayers series utilises the symbol of the cell membrane and various cultural motifs to explore the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic on how society connects physically, emotionally and metaphorically.
Phospholipid bilayers are the major molecular structure that make up billions of membranes within our bodies. Embedded within them are receptors and channels that work together to allow passage to chemicals. When these receptors receive the correct signals, they allow channels to ‘open up’.
In these works, Jain uses the phospholipid bilayers as a metaphor and encourages the viewer to reflect on what we consume, absorb and exude, both as individuals and as a society.
The exhibition was presented as part of National Science Week (12 – 20 August 2023).
