Learning through play

Playdough

Quality interactions, which include play and having conversations with your child, is one of the most important things you can do to support their learning and development. We can help you to create a stimulating environment with a collection of great activities that you can try at home that use affordable household items:

Smalltalk Conversations

Hobsons Bay City Council’s Supported Playgroup team can offer eligible families five free interactive sessions as part of our Smalltalk Conversations program.

Participating families will engage in fun play-based activities with the support of a trained Early Years professional who can guide parents and carers on strategies such as:

  • Interacting with their child in a warm and gentle manner
  • Tuning into their child by giving them their full attention
  • Observing and attending to what their child shows interest in
  • Listening and talking to their child frequently
  • Understanding how to use teachable moments.

Families can also chat with team about additional supports such as:

  • Connecting with local services
  • Parenting concerns such as tantrums and toilet training
  • Parent well-being
  • Connecting with the community
  • Routines

The sessions can be weekly or fortnightly and go for between 60 and 90 minutes.

Sessions can be run at your home, or the team can meet you at a local venue.
