Open House Melbourne: Altona Homestead
Next date: Saturday, 27 July 2024 | 11:00 AM
to 02:00 PM
Altona Homestead (originally Laverton Homestead), designed and built by Alfred and Sarah Langhorne in 1841, was the first homestead built on the foreshore of Port Phillip Bay or Naarm.
Located on Logan Reserve Altona, it is a unique and treasured part of Altona’s heritage.
The building was originally made from wood, but after horrific bushfires in 1851 it was rebuilt using blue stone imported from Tasmania. In its time, it has served as a working farm, seaside accommodation for employees of local industry and performed as the original Altona Council Chambers when it was the Shire of Altona.
Now home to the Altona and Laverton Historical Society, it is a beautiful immersive space housing a curated collection of art and artefacts. The homestead provides visitors an opportunity to genuinely appreciate the day-to-day life of mid-19th century coastal farming.
What's On
The Homestead will be open between 11am and 2pm. Bookings are not required.
