Open House Melbourne: Altona Water Treatment Plant

Aerial view of Altona Water Treatment Plant and A Forest For Australia

When you think wastewater treatment, you probably don’t think world-renowned art. In 1998, New York-based environmental artist Agnes Denes created A Forest for Australia at Greater Western Water’s Altona Treatment Plant.

The land art, spanning eight acres, used 3,700 trees to create five circular spirals. This is a rare opportunity to explore the artwork and learn about its inspiration, early climate challenges and subsequent rejuvenation.

What's On

Join a guided walking tour of the Altona Treatment Plant, followed by acclaimed land artist Agnes Denes’ work, A Forest for Australia.

Discover the fascinating water treatment process, where engineers collaborate with friendly bacteria to sustainably process millions of litres of wastewater daily. This provides recycled water for industry and irrigation for green spaces.

Tours depart at 8am, 10.30am, 1pm and 3.30pm (duration 90-minutes).

Additional info

While the presentation is focused on adults, children over the age of twelve are welcome to join under supervision.
