Before free libraries, community centres, and TAFE, Mechanics’ Institutes led the way to a more equal Australia. Originating from a radical Scottish movement to educate workers, they thrived here, especially in Victoria. Of over 3,000 nationwide, about 1,000 were in Victoria (1839–1930s), including three in Hobsons Bay: Newport, Spotswood, and Williamstown.
These Walls Speak Volumes is an indexed history of these institutions. Join authors Ken James and Pam Baragwanath to explore their cultural significance in Victoria and beyond.
