Routine land surveys for closed landfill sites

We are performing routine land surveys to test the gases underneath the surface at closed landfill sites throughout the municipality.

At Hobsons Bay, there are several closed landfill and quarry sites that have been transformed into open spaces and conservation areas for the community and the habitat. The survey involves the installation of bores throughout the area that will be able to monitor and measure potential underground gases.

The survey will begin in August 2024 for a 12-month period at both Newport Lakes Reserve and Bruce Comben Reserve.

This routine land survey is carried out to ensure the safety and wellbeing of our community and environment. The results from the survey will provide useful information to continually improve the quality of our open spaces and conservation areas throughout Hobsons Bay. In accordance with the EPA Act 2017, we have an environmental duty to mitigate risks associated with closed landfill sites that are owned or managed by Council.

During the installation of the bores in August, you can expect increased activity, noise and some traffic management measures in place within the surrounding streets.
