Footpath installation and maintenance
Footpaths are designed to ensure that your community has access to dedicated pathways leading from homes to shops, parks and public transport so that families have a protected space to walk away from roads and traffic.
There are three types of footpath works that Council undertakes:
- Construct new footpaths in areas where there is no footpath provision
- Replace footpaths that are in poor condition
- Repair and maintain existing footpaths
Installation
Council acknowledges its role in providing new pathways that improve community safety and provide connectivity. The 2017 New Pathway Policy(PDF, 567KB) provides a strategic and procedural framework to assist Council in making decisions for the provision of new pathways in the municipality.
The policy includes details in relation to planning and site selection, general provisions and specifications, the community consultation process and notification requirements for proposed works.
Maintenance
There are over 700km of footpaths in Hobsons Bay. Ongoing repair and maintenance to preserve these footpaths is undertaken systematically throughout the municipality. Each footpath is inspected annually in residential areas and every six months in high-use areas like shopping precincts. If a footpath is deemed hazardous, there are a range of solutions Council undertakes to fix these, including immediate repairs and maintenance.
A next day solution on footpaths is taken, depending on the size of the hazard, either grinding or using asphalt fillers to make a footpath safe. The footpath is then prioritised depending on condition for replacement.
