Public notice: Proposed permanent closure of Pier Street

During COVID in 2020, Council closed a section of Pier Street in Altona to vehicles. The section of Pier Street between Queen Street and Blyth Street was originally closed to vehicles to enhance the Pier Street precinct during the shutdowns, and the initiative was warmly welcomed by the community. It has resulted in greatly improved safety for pedestrians and provides additional space near the beach for visitors and locals to enjoy.

Council resolved to place the proposal to permanently close this section of Pier Street, on public exhibition at the 13 August 2024, Council meeting. This project to permanently close the road will incorporate significant streetscape and activation space.
