Junior Council
Hobsons Bay 360 #101: Junior Council Initiative: Engaging Young Minds in Local Governance
Junior Council is a special initiative run by Hobsons Bay City Council, designed to engage local primary school students in a hands-on learning experience about local governance and community involvement. Held every 1-2 months, these meetings allow students to experience how a council operates and participate in discussions about issues relevant to their schools and community. These meetings also offer students the unique opportunity to meet the Mayor and other Councillors.
Junior Council provides a unique platform for students to actively participate in local governance, learn about community issues, and develop public speaking and leadership skills. It's a valuable experience that encourages civic engagement from a young age. The current schools we have participating are:
• Newport Gardens Primary
• Altona Green Primary School
• St Margaret Mary's Primary
• St Mary’s Primary School Altona
• St Mary’s Primary School Williamstown
This year marks the 60th year of Junior Council, which started as the Altona Junior Council and then became the Hobsons Bay Junior Council, following the amalgamation of councils in 1994. This is a milestone that highlights our long-standing commitment to nurturing young leaders in our community. This year we have had 130 attendees, with approximately another 45 registered for the upcoming session in September.
As we celebrate this remarkable initiative, we look forward to many more years of inspiring young minds and fostering a sense of community and civic responsibility in Hobsons Bay.
