Plastic Free July wrap-up
Hobsons Bay 360 #106: Council's commitment to reducing plastic waste
Throughout Plastic Free July this year, Hobsons Bay City Council actively encouraged and supported our community and staff to reduce single-use plastic waste. These efforts reflect our ongoing commitment to reducing plastic waste and fostering a sustainable future for Hobsons Bay.
Our Plastic Free July campaign featured several impactful actions:
- Community events: We hosted seven events focused on Plastic Free July, offering residents practical ways to cut down on plastic. A highlight was our STEAM club, where children learned about plastic-free alternatives and designed reusable shopping bags featuring their own Plastic Free July slogans.
- 'Plastic Free Businesses' Program: Local businesses were invited to commit to one plastic-reducing action for the month, showcasing the power of small, collective efforts.
- Workplace Initiatives: Council staff were supported in adopting plastic-free practices in the workplace, making it easier to contribute to the cause daily.
- Leadership: Our Mayor took the Plastic Free July pledge, setting an example for the community.
- Community tips: Throughout July, we shared tips and tricks on social media to help our community make sustainable choices.
- National Tree Day: This popular event emphasised reusables and recyclables, ensuring our environmental celebrations were also plastic-free.
The initiative demonstrated that going plastic-free doesn’t have to be overwhelming—sometimes, it’s as simple as avoiding just one item. Together, we can make a significant impact, one small step at a time.
