Hobsons Bay 360 #25: Creating vibrancy in Hobsons Bay

In an average year, Council supports more than 60 festivals and events as well as many local community celebrations. Over summer our Events team organised 3 amazing Summer Sounds events across Hobsons Bay. Many community members attended, with approximately 200 people in attendance at Laverton, approximately 750 at the Altona event in Logan Reserve and 750 people at Commonwealth Reserve in Williamstown. There were over 1,400 people that attended across the three events.

What’s so great about events and festivals?

Our events are developed in line with Council’s Events and Festival plan which aims to create vibrancy and to contribute to making our city a great place to live and to visit. A few of the benefits of the Summer Sounds series of events include:

  • economic benefits to local traders
  • free accessible family friendly activities
  • access to live music and performance arts
  • an opportunity to develop circus skills (there were great circus performers at Summer Sounds) and
  • an opportunity to connect with each other.

Our events and festivals are a big part of how we come together to celebrate our cultural riches in things such as arts, music, diversity and also in stimulating our local economy and tourism. Hobsons Bay City Council funds, produces or supports a number of events, festivals and cultural programs that form the basis of our annual events and festivals calendar. This role is critical and aligns with our community’s values and priorities for health and wellbeing Cr Peter Hemphill (Strand Ward).
