The Esplanade Permanent Road Closure

Every summer since 2018, we closed the Esplanade between Bent Street and Pier Street in Altona to vehicles.

The closure safely links the beachfront with nearby reserves, cafés, shops and the Altona Life Saving Club. It has resulted in greatly improved safety for pedestrians and provides additional space near the beach for visitors and locals to enjoy.

The closure has been very well received by locals and the broader public. Council resolved to place the proposal to permanently close the Esplanade on public exhibition at the May 2024 Council meeting. This project to permanently close the road will incorporate significant streetscape, landscaping and road safety works as represented in the plan and render below.

Consultation

As part of the process to permanently close the section of the Esplanade, from Bent Street to Pier Street, community consultation was undertaken in August 2020. The purpose of this consultation was to get community feedback on the planned permanent closure. Three different options were presented to the community as to the future permanent arrangement for the section. View the 2020 community consultation report here.
