Themes and Locations
Each Centre of Excellence will have a unique theme that programs, activities, specialist equipment and collections will be curated around. The following themes for the centres have been proposed and will be developed through community consultation.
Location: Altona Meadows Library and Learning Centre
Theme: STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, & Mathematics)
Progress: Completed in September 2023 and now open.
Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics will come to life at Altona Meadows. A refurbishment of this site sees new technology integrated with purpose-built learning spaces creating a bridge between the community and technology.
Location: Altona North Community Library
Theme: Video Games and Board Games
Progress: Project commences July 2024.
Altona North Library is situated between two local high schools making it a popular after school destination for many students. The aim of this Centre of Excellence will be to encourage learning through play, including programming around video game development, learning coding skills or expression through animation.

Theme: Environment & Sustainability
Progress: A timeframe for this Centre of Excellence is currently being developed.
The existing EnviroCentre at Altona Library will be enhanced through further curation of the collection and the events and activities available.
Location: Williamstown Library
Theme: Heritage, Writing and Publishing
Progress: A timeframe for this Centre of Excellence is currently being developed.
The existing Heritage Centre at Williamstown Library will be enhanced through curation of the current collection and the events and activities available. Williamstown Library is a supporter of the annual Williamstown Literary Festival with the branch being a hub for local authors. This Centre of Excellence will build on the themes of writing and publishing.
Location: Newport Community Hub
Theme: Art and Music
Progress: A timeframe for this Centre of Excellence is currently being developed.
Newport Community Hub is a base for seniors groups, young families and youth. With a music studio and instruments available for loan and a local arts community, including the Substation located across the road, Newport Community Hub has naturally evolved into a central location for all things arts, culture and music, a theme to explore with Centres of Excellence.
Location: Altona Civic Centre
Theme: Business, Entrepreneurship and Innovation
Progress: A timeframe for this Centre of Excellence is currently being developed.
Supporting the local business community and start ups, the Civic Centre will host different courses and workshops with a focus on emerging skills required for the future workforce. This could be marketing for social media, design thinking or project management skills.
