I’m very pleased to be included in the Homegrown Hobson’s Bay initiative. I wrote the book in the Altona library, mostly, but partially in the Williamstown library, occasionally the Newport library and twice, I went to the Altona Central library. There were a few cafes in Altona in the mix too. I have a favourite table to work on up the back of the Altona library.
I’m 5th Generation Altonian from the Grant clan. I lived on the Mago (Explosives Reserve) with my parents and grandparents (Noel and Jean Grant) and went to Altona Primary School, as my mother and Grandfather and his siblings did - including Uncle Doug Grant (past Mayor).
The novel is largely connected to growing up in the Seaholme and Altona Masonic Lodges, and our family’s legacy is noted on two public parks, and the Hockey club, Cricket and Football clubs of Altona, I was also in the Seaholme school of Ballet, the Altona Youth Callisthenics club, and even had my 21st birthday at The Altona Bowling Club! I’m the founder of ACTion, the Altona City Theatre’s youth theatre and spent decades on shows at Altona City Theatre on and off the stage. That’s probably a bit of overkill - but you get the point. I’m proud to be homegrown from Altona.
