The area known as Newport Lakes had been a quarry since 1868 and ultimately earmarked to become a rubbish tip. In 1984, two women, both local councillors, decided on an alternate future for the area. Influenced by the Butchart Gardens, Canada the plan for what is now the Newport Lakes conservation area commenced. This 120-minute guided walk will include eight points of interest with photos and stories of the Lakes area from pre-colonial days to today. Come prepared for stories of convicts, shootings and murders; as well as contemporary tales of conservation, placemaking and regenerative development.
