International Women’s Day (IWD) is celebrated around the world on 8 March to acknowledge the social, economic, cultural and political achievements of women – while also marking a call to action for accelerating gender equality.
The United Nation's theme for International Women’s Day 2024 was #InspireInclusion with the campaign theme seeking to get the world to understand and value women's inclusion.
International Women's Day in Hobsons Bay 2024
On the eve of International Women's Day (7 March 2024) Hobsons Bay hosted two events - one, celebrating women in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and maths) open to the broader community; and another, for the business community in partnership with Maribyrnong City Council.
Celebrating Hobsons Bay Women in STEAM
Hobsons Bay City Council invited community members to join us on the eve of International Women's Day for a celebration of local women in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Maths) at the Altona Meadows STEAM Centre of Excellence.

Dr Lorien Parker (aka Dr Loz)
Science
Lorien who has autism and ADHD, founded SciencePlay Kids to inspire young children by showing them that science is everywhere. She has worked across the world, sent her experiments into space, has a PhD in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and was named as one of the AFR’s 100 Women of Influence.
Dr Catriona Nguyen-Robertson
Technology
Catriona is an immunologist and science communicator. She uses lasers and microscopes to study the immune system. She also uses all sorts of tech to share science, from facilitating workshops, writing articles about AI and robotics, developing content for an augmented reality game and creating songs about science, that she shares on radio and in videos.
Cr Antoinette Briffa
Engineering
While we know Cr Briffa for her work at Council, advocacy in the LGBTIQA+ community and for human rights everywhere, this panel introduces Cr Briffa in more capacities, specifically her background as an aerospace/engineering specialist.
Nuala Furtado
Arts
The CEO of The Substation in Newport, Nuala is a cultural leader with over 10 years experience. Nuala has worked in contemporary practice in the arts across Brisbane, Sydney and now here in Hobsons Bay.
Emi Neville
Mathematics
Emi is the Head of Mathematics at Laverton College. She displays her passion for supporting students to learn math by creating dynamic learning environments and overcoming barriers to education. She loves mathematics and teaching it, wanting to enable access to quality math learning to every student.
2024 Business Networking - International Women's Day event
Hobsons Bay City Council and the City of Maribyrnong invited business professionals to come together for a special International Women's Day event.
This lunchtime event featured keynote speaker Julie Hirsch, Co-Founder of Eloments Vitamin Teas and Mullin Mulling Spices and was hosted by MC Ailsa Page, founder and director of AP Marketing Works.
