Winter in Williamstown
Hobsons Bay 360 #97: Bringing Commonwealth Reserve to life in Winter
Winter in Williamstown was all about celebrating the chilliest season with outdoor wintery fun, community connections, and live entertainment, providing low-cost activities for families during the winter school holidays.
The event was held from 28 June to 14 July 2024 offering a synthetic ice-skating rink which was erected on Commonwealth Reserve. In total, over 7,500 ice-skating tickets were sold bringing many visitors to the area to explore Nelson Place, Gem Pier, Commonwealth Reserve and local eateries and shops.
Nightly light projections added to the atmosphere, highlighting Williamstown’s attractions including the HMAS Castlemaine and local legends, like former Williamstown resident, track athlete and Olympian Peter Norman who was featured on a large light projection. Peter Norman’s biography, The Peter Norman story, is available to loan from Hobsons Bay Libraries and details more about his amazing career.
Entertainment at the Rotunda
Throughout Winter in Williamstown, on Friday and Saturday nights the Rotunda in Commonwealth Reserve was transformed into a DJ stage. On these nights the Reserve included additional light installations, LED hoola hooping, dancing and interactive theatre, with local arts company, Born in a Taxi, ensuring the Illuminated Angels made an appearance, delighting event goers with their unique performance-style.
